Minnesota's Senate has live video coverage and archives the video, but how can you pull down this government video and edit it?

First get a free application called VLC
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Find the link to the stream and copy it. The example here is mms://stream2.video.state.mn.us/Senate/cmte_stgov_010909.wmv which is a windows media file.

Now open up VLC
Go to "Streaming/Expoting Wizard" (under mac it's under File)
then
transcode/save to file
select a stream ( paste the link)
parial extract (if desired otherwise it will do it all)
do NOT transcode video (unless you need to but the container and code should match don't transcode into quicktime and give it a non quicktime container)
select ASF container (file extension)
save to (name a file somewhere, do not give it an extension)

Now to convert the file into something you can edit I suggest Quicktime Pro ($29) and a free plug in called Perian. Between the two you can open and transcode nearly anything.

I ran into the AVCHD format for the first time last night. It was from a Sony Handycam with a hard drive recorder. AVCHD is one way of recording high definition video. The things I learned were:
1) AVCHD looks very good
2) AVCHD and Macs are not a happy combination.

This is not to say you can't edit AVCHD on a Mac, however it can be time consuming just to get the video on to your computer. Then it takes up about 5 times as much room as DV or HDV video that you would shoot with most other mini-dv tape camcorders.

Here's why. AVCHD is recorded in a format called H.264. This new format is a great combination of high definition and compression. The problem is editing H.264. To edit it on a mac, you need to change it into something else. Apple's two editing programs (iMovie 7 and Final Cut Pro 6.0.1) convert the AVCHD/H.264 video as it is imported. That can be a slow process. On my Macbook Pro it took 4 hours to import 1 hour of video.
That one hour of video was about 60 GB... which pretty much filled up my hard drive.

If you have an older power pc mac (instead of an intel mac), you can't use Final Cut Pro to import the video. It just won't do it.

On a windows machine, this is apparently not a problem.

But if you are editing on a mac, avoid getting a camera with the AVCHD format...at least until the technology gets better.

Hi Stan,
You need three items.
First a tripod and/or a monpod. You can buy either at Best Buy for 20 to 30 dollars. If you buy a tripod, get one that has a bubble on it so you tell if the tripod is level.

Second is a directional microphone with an XLR connector. The XLR connector has three prongs in it. The XLR cable is "balanced" meaning it prevents buzzing from electrical interference such as flourescent lights. You do NOT want an ON/OFF switch. That's just one more thing that can go wrong when shooting. I use a Shure SM 57 microphone which is a pretty good all purpose mic which you can buy for about $99 on line. You'll also need to get an XLR cable. You can get those in the online stores or Radio Shack for about $20.

Finally you need an adaptor to connect the XLR cable to your camera. The only audio input to the Canon HV20 is through the microphone miniplug. Some nice to haves:
An inexpensive tripod is good for steady shots. But if you want to pan smoothly (move the camera left or right) or tilt smoothly (point the camera up or down) it may be a little jerky. If you need that type of smoothness when you're shooting, look into a tripod with a better "head" (the part the camera sits on). I use a tripod and head from Manfrotto. It has a smooth pan and tilt and allows me to level the tripod head without changing the length of the legs. This is a real timesaver in situations where you have to set up quickly.

The $20 XLR to mini plug adaptor is great for microphones, but it has a few drawbacks. You can't take a line level audio feed without the audio sounding distorted. Line level audio often comes from Public Address systems. This is why I use a BeachTek adaptor. It is a small box you attach under your camera with one or two XLR inputs and a mini plug cable that you plug into your camera's microphone jack. On the box is a switch for mic and line level. Additional batteries and a charger. Get the larger capacity batteries. National Camera Exchange sells Promaster Batteries (PNB-2L14) that last much longer than the standard batteries that come with the camera. You can charge your battery in the camera, but consider getting a charger so you can recharge a battery while you're shooting. National Camera Exchange sells the chargers too (Canon CB-2LW).

A small light - the HV20 has a built in light which is good in a pinch, but consider getting a light that you can put on the top of the camera. I have a larger light kit, so I don't have one of these for the HV20. But if you stop in at National Camera Exchange they can probably recommend a good light.

This is a preliminary document I'm putting together for a Citizen Video Journalism class. I've had requests for this info, so I'm posting it here.

Recommended Equipment
CAMERAS

Thanks to technology, there are lots of cameras that will create great video. Rather than give you specific models here are the features you really want in a camera.

#1 – Microphone input. You’d be surprised how many cameras do NOT have them. You usually only find them on the lowest end cameras (that are targeted to the education market) and the most expensive ones. Built in camera microphones are usually pretty lousy and pick up lots of hand noise as well as room noise. There are times and places that you’ll want to use the built in microphone, but you’ll always want the option of using an additional microphone.

#2 – Firewire or some other digital output. You need a way to get your video on to a computer for editing. Unless you have flash or hard drive storage on your camera, you’ll need to play the tape to get the video into your computer. Keeping it digital avoids going to analog…which can degrade your video quality.

Recording medium

Tape, Hard Drive, Flash or DVD?
Tape – specifically mini DV tape is the best way to go, particularly when you’re working with a team. The cameras are inexpensive and the picture quality is great. It also helps that you can hand off a tape to someone else and he or she has a camera that can play it back. Unless it’s a camera you already own, don’t invest in a hi-8 or VHS camera.

Hard Drive and flash storage is great if you can afford it. Transferring the video files to someone else’s computer often requires that you give the other person your camera for the transfer.

DVD is probably the worst option at the moment. The small discs don’t play in your computer or DVD player.

High or Standard Definition?
If you can afford a high definition camera, go for it. The HDV cameras produce spectacular results. It also gives you the option of “zooming in” on something in post production without getting horrible distortion. And despite what a salesperson might tell you, they use the same mini DV cassettes that the standard definition cameras use. So no need to pay extra for special “HDV tapes”. But HD also comes with it’s share of problems – most notably it takes more hard drive space to store the video and it’s harder to exchange raw video with others when it’s in HD. Standard Definition cameras can cost hundreds of dollars less and are the best option for most folks.

Cameras that meet these specifications:
Canon Optura 50 (discontinued – but available on ebay $250-$350)
Canon ZR500 (discontinued – but available on ebay $160)
Canon ZR800 $205-$225
Canon HV-20 (high definition) ($800-$900)
Panasonic AG-DVC20 ($1,200)
Canon GL-2 ($2,000 to $2,400)
Panasonic AG-DVX100B ($2,600)

Microphones and adaptors
There are many kinds of microphones, many tailored for specific situations. Again there are a few basics you want to look for:

1) XLR cable connectors. These are the kind of cables the professionals use. XLR cables are shielded and balanced. Which means they don’t pick up buzzes from electrical fields as easily.
2) Directional instead of omni-directional. Directional mics pick up what’s directly in front of them. Omni directional mics pick up sound from a much wider angle. Usually when doing interviews you’ll want to eliminate the noise of the crowd around you. That’s why you usually want the directional mics

Adaptors—most of the low end cameras do NOT have XLR cable inputs. So you’ll need an adaptor. Beachtek makes some great adaptors that include a line/mic switch as well as the ability to use more than one mic. A line level switch is a good thing to have when recording from a sound system. Otherwise your audio will sound distorted. You can also get a straight XLR to mini plug adaptor from B and H Photo that will do the trick, but there’s no way to take in line level audio.

Tripods/ Monopods

The most important thing is to have one. Not only will it keep your camera steady, but it will allow you to walk away from it and talk to the camera. You can also use your tripod/monopod as a way to hold the camera away from you to talk to it. A tripod/monopod can also serve as a makeshift “steady cam”.

Lights
All cameras of recent vintage can shot with available light in most situations. But it’s always helpful to have a small light on your camera to “warm up” your subject and make them stand out from the background.

Batteries
The battery that comes with your camera will typically last about an hour or less. Consider getting some higher storage batteries and an extra charger if you camera is your charger.

Government and corporations often don't take Mac users into consideration when posting video. The Minnesota House of Representatives is one such organization that uses Windows Media. Here's how to watch and download their video.

Go to the page that lists the videos.
Do a control click or a right-click on the "non-frames version" link.
Choose "Download linked file" from the contextual menu that pops up.
Find the downloaded file on your hard drive. It will probably end with a .asf extension. Do a control-click or right click on the file and choose "open with" --you'll see a list of applications. Choose "other" and then find your TextEdit application. The other way to do this is to open TextEdit and then use it to open the downloaded file.

The file will contain two groups of lines. You want the SECOND group. The first line will have a url that begins with "mms:", you DON'T want that one. The next line will have a url that begins with "http". Copy that url (without the quote marks) and then go back to your browser (Safari is best for this) and paste in the url and hit return or enter. It may take a minute or two, but the video will load and play in Safari.

In my classes I recommend using microphones that use an XLR cable to reduce buzz from other electronics. Most consumer cameras do not have an XLR input for the microphone. Instead they have a mini-plug. This is the same size of plug you might have for your headphones. So how do you get the XLR cable to connect to the mini plug?

You use an adapter. The most inexpensive one I've been able to find is available for $19.95. You can order it from B and H Photo (one of my favorite suppliers) at

There is one problem with using an adapter like this. If someone pulls on the cord, you can easily damage the mic jack on the camera. To prevent this, I recommend looping the adapter cable through the camera strap in a knot. This way if someone pulls on the cable, they pull on the strap and not the fragile mic jack.

When you're recording audio in the field, it usually comes in one of two flavors - mic level or line level. If you don't deal with each one correctly you can end up with audio that is either very distorted or audio you can barely hear.

Mic level audio is exactly what it sounds like... it's audio directly from the microphone with no amplifiers in between the microphone and your camera. When you plug a microphone into your camera's mic jack this is the flavor of audio you're getting. So normally there's no problem with this type of audio.

Line level audio is audio that's been amplified. Typical sources of this kind of audio are feeds from public address systems or microphone mixers. You'll run into line level audio if you are plugged into a audio feed at an event. If you feed line level audio directly into your camera's mic jack you'll end up with distortion and your audio will sound like it was recorded next to a jet engine. If you have an audio meter on your camera, very often (but not always) the audio level will be pushed all the way to the right. After audio is recorded like this, there is no way to fix it.

This is why I use a microphone adapter box from Beachtek. It has a mic/line switch. When I have a line level feed I flip the switch to "line". When I'm just plugging in my microphone directly I switch it to "mic".

This works well unless I leave the switch in the wrong position. If I plug a microphone directly into the adaptor box and the switch is set to "line", I'll get audio I can barely hear. I can boost the level of this audio when I edit it, but it's likely to have a lot of hiss or other noise in it, making it hard to make out what the speaker is saying.

This is why I always carry a good pair of headphones and wear them while I'm recording. Not only can I hear that the audio isn't distorted or too low, but I can also hear if there are any other problems with the audio such as buzzes from cell phones or shorts. More on those types of problems and how to solve them in another post.

Most consumer cameras you can buy today are going to be just fine for citizen journalism. But here are a couple of things to look for (or avoid).
1) Make sure the camera has a separate microphone jack. Otherwise you're stuck using the one mounted on the camera. These built-in mics are better than they used to be, but they still don't work real well for interviews unless the subject is close to the camera.
2) If you're giving a choice between DV and HDV and all things else are equal, take the HDV. It is the format of the future.
3) Avoid the disc based cameras, at least for now. They're not cross platform and it's not easy to play the discs in a home DVD player.
4) I came across a camera today that did NOT have a headphone jack (or at least I couldn't find it). Any camera you buy MUST have a headphone jack, or you can't properly monitor the audio (see the post on mic and line level audio and you'll understand why).

Automatic cameras are great. But they're not as smart as they should be. Otherwise they'd yell at you if you were shooting someone with a background twice as bright as the light on the person's face.

Until they make 'em that smart, you'll just need to remember to do a few simple things.

1) Zoom in on your subject and lock your focus. When you've got a set shot the camera doesn't always know what you want to focus on. So the auto focus sometimes will bounce between you subject and something in the background. You may not notice when looking into a small viewfinder, but when the video is big enough for all to see it looks like your video is wacky.

2)While you're close up on a face locking your focus, lock your exposure too. There's nothing worse than trying to pick out someone's face when it looks like a black blob against a very bright background.

3) Use a microphone. Yes, camera mics are getting better... but they still pick up a lot of extra noise you don't want and not enough of the noise you do want. Audio is more than half of the video experience (try watching a video with the sound turned off and you'll see what I mean).
